Dice and Randomness

Every now and then we post interesting stories about Nueva and its alums, stories that show some essential quality of Nueva students and education. If you have one, please email it to Matt.

Prior to a freshman World Religions oral exam with twelve potential questions, the teacher informed the class that the students would only need to answer five of the twelve questions, and that he, the teacher, would select the five questions randomly on the day of the test using a pair of dice.

Most of the students, simmering in a late spring stupor, were prepared to blithely follow these instructions. But one Nueva graduate's hand popped up.

"Excuse me Mr. Brown, this method will not result in random questions. We won't need to study question 1 at all, because it will not occur in a pair of dice, and we would concentrate our studies on question 7, as its probability of occurring is the highest.

"I have a 12-sided die at home and can bring it in if that would be of help to you."

Always thinking, speaking up and engaging in class, thinking mathematically, more interested in learning than in finding the easy way, and, of course, using those SEL skills to be helpful rather than confrontational -- several of the hallmarks of Nueva students.

Alumni Information

Welcome to the Nueva Alumni page. We are in the process of creating more online resources for alumni so please check back from time to time for updates and ways to connect with your classmates, former teachers, and the opportunities that await you, still, at The Nueva School!

I hope to hear from YOU, too. Where are you now? What are you up to? How have your interests and passions directed your life paths? We are always interested in alumni updates for the Class Notes section of The Wavelength. Please also continue to send us updates with your most current contact information---email, phone, address. We know this information changes periodically, and we do not want to lose contact with you.  Submit your updates to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

What would you like Nueva to offer that could enrich your life as an alum? What tips or experiences could you offer to current students or parents? When might you return to tour the campus? Could you help us find lost alums? Please feel free to contact me and let me know how I might assist you in reconnecting to what, I suspect, has been a formative community in your life -- NUEVA!

As we work to create and implement a dynamic alumni program, we need committed alumni volunteers to help us reconnect with our alumni base and encourage participation in programs and reunions. Perhaps getting involved as a Class Rep is something you would like to do.

Alumni Class Rep Responsibilities:

  1. With the support of the Nueva Alumni Task Force and Development Committee, contact classmates to get current address/phone/email information.
  2. Encourage participation in upcoming programs and events. For instance, alumni can:
    • Speak to students—share experiences and advice, serve as a mentor
    • Tour the campus
    • Be interviewed for a profile in a publication (Nueva Journal, Wavelength)
    • Submit a "Class Note" for publication - updates us on what's new for you
    • Recruit other class representatives and volunteers
    • Share alumni information through your Facebook or networking site.
  3. Help plan a class reunion!

For more information about alumni relations, to sign up to serve as a Class Rep, or just to reconnect, please contact me soon!
